Clubmark: Clubmark is a National Scheme whereby clubs work towards achieving nationally recognized standards.  When awarded the Clubmark this means that a club can guarantee certain things are happening e.g. Coaches have been through and approved by CRB checking system.

Last year we signed up to the UKA / Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership (WASP) led Clubmark programme. On the club’s behalf Geoff has attended 2 of the 4 requisite quarterly meetings and is currently trying to build our evidence folder.

Talking of the evidence folder we need to have copies in it of CRB checks, courses attended, coaching awards and all the other attendance forms etc that prove we are striving toward getting recognition toward attaining the club mark award. Club activists please let Geoff have copies for the folder.

Congratulations:

Congratulations to Gemma Young our star shot putter (First claim for Team Bath) who recently won her event at Bracknell with a put of 10.49M (Gemma’s PB is 10.82M which ranks her as 57th overall and 10th in the Under 17 age group in the UK.

Congratulations also to Sarah Neate during a Sprints and Hurdles challenge at Yate on the 5th of April (competing first Claim for Team Bath) broke the 75 M hurdles Team Bath under 15 club record which had

stood since 1996 in 11.96s. Sarah did this event in 11.8 at the Bracknell open on 28th March and then 11.7 at Yate on 5th of April where she also ran the 100m in 13.09 and 200m in 27.07! Sarah is now ranked 3rd for the 75M hurdles in her age group in the UK.

Club Kit:

Currently the main item of club clothing is the hoodie – please ensure you wear yours as it helps coaches remember your name! Additionally the club has a stock of team vests which are loaned to athletes for competition purposes. If there is enough interest in buying a club vest we will place an order. Please let Carol know if you would be interested in buying one.  T-Shirts are also available if there is enough interest – please ask if you would like one.  With summer in mind  why not also purchase a team baseball cap.

Membership renewals:

The 1st of April brings the start of the Club’s new-year and with it membership renewals!  Forms will be handed out to bring your membership and any change of details up to date or you can download one from the web site.

Season Fee:

The Summer season fee starts now as well - £2.00 per attendance or £20 upfront for the whole season.

The Club needs more support: The club cannot continue to function unless it has active parental support.

The Club is currently held together by a very small number of activists. Derek Drewitt as President and middle distance coach (Level 3), Colin Baross as Chairman and coach (Level 3), Geoff as elected Treasurer and Child Welfare Officer and in the absence of any other volunteer currently trying to perform the role of Secretary and Membership Secretary along with the new role of webmaster, Carol as Coach (Level 3) who as well as a sprints background will now be taking on the role of throws coach. Valuable assistance is also provided by our very able trainee coaches, Lucy Baross and Stephanie Bridewell who will be taking their Level 1 qualifications in due course.  Elisabeth Hadderell and Ella Feducia-Brookes have also been very good helpers. We also have a very capable presence on training nights from Derek Stevens and Alistair Bissatt.  We desperately need more people to become part of the management team. For example, at our last committee meeting (albeit held prior to the AGM) only five people attended!

Newsletter Content:

If you would like anything included in the next Newsletter – please let Carol, Colin or Geoff know.  We hope to have a club record list produced by the end of the summer season.

Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC):

From the 16th of December 2008 your club holds CASC status. This means we are open to anyone who wants to join us. The big advantages this brings revolve around tax advantages. We now have a charitable status.  Therefore, we can reclaim tax from sponsors on such things as the sponsored walk which Colin leads annually but also from anyone who makes donations to the club. Plus we will be eligible to apply for grants from bodies which only give to charities.

Water: Please ensure that you keep well hydrated during training – bring a good supply of water to drink. Plain Water - not fizzy drinks of flavoured waters. A number of our athletes have experienced problems after consuming certain additive laden drinks (including some well known sports drinks) - problems such as skin rashes.  There is also a belief amongst some food scientists and support groups (such as the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group) that additives including synthetic sweeteners and colorants trigger behavioural problems.  For more information please go to   www.additivesout.org.uk or ask Carol or Geoff.

Clothing: Now we are outdoors again please ensure you bring clothing suitable for the Devizes weather – a waterproof outfit, spare dry socks to change into and above all something to keep you warm if it turns chilly. We are booking a single gymnasium at the school for training nights – to use as a base but also as a wet weather alternative.

Committee Meeting:  Whilst training takes place on Wednesday the 29th of April 2009 we plan to hold a committee meeting in the Gymnasium. As Colin (our Chair) and many of the other active members of the team will be outside running the training session we are greatly relying on other, particularly parents, to take an active part in the meeting: A reminder the following attended the AGM in November 08 where it was agreed that those attending would take an active part if possible:  Colin Baross  (Chairman & Level 3 Coach), Carol Brewer (Coaching Coordinator & Level 3 Coach), Geoff Brewer (Treasurer, Welfare Officer, & Level 2 Coach), Steve Culip, Derek Drewitt (President & Level 2 Endurance Coach), Dave Fishlock, Graham Haddrell, Mike Hamblen, Tracy Hodge, Lee Humpheries, Joce Reville-Schneider, Derek Stevens, Barrie Smale and Carol Webb. Others equally welcome!
